Decoding Jewelry Markings: What Does '14K H' Mean?

Question
Hi, Thomas
I know you've already have a lot of question about
metal markings but please let me ask one.

I found my white gold belly ring(with stone looks like
diamond) is marked "14K H". The marking is very clear,
that is all what it says. I am wondering what does "H"
means.

Thank you so much in advance.

Answer
Mimi, thanks for the question.

Yes,I get lots of questions like this one but you do not have the answer and we treat it like a new question.  The H is likely the makers mark.  The law in the USA requires that if an item has a karat stamp (metal quality mark), then the maker must put a mark near that quality mark.  This is like signing a check to say it is real and valid.  A piece of jewelry does not have to be marked at all(which does not make sense if you want to sell it and claim it is a certain karat!) but if the karat is shown, the maker must verify that with a mark near the karat stamp.  There you go.  : )

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
