Understanding 18k DCD/PEP: Gold Quality Mark or Maker's Mark?

Question
I have an old bracelet which belonged to my grandmother.  On the inside is 18k DCD  or PEP  (it's hard to tell as there might be some wear on the bottom of the letters.  Would these be makers marks or are gold quality markings?

Thanks for your help,

Susan

Answer
Hi, Susan. Thanks for the question.

I believe the letters are makers marks, marked as that should be along with the quality mark of 18k.   There is a less common quality mark which does include letters along with a karat mark and that is HGE.  The mark would be 18k HGE.  The letters mean heavy gold electroplate which is a thicker than usual gold plate but is costume nevertheless.

Your marks appear to be 18k as the quality of the metal and the maker designated by the letters.

Have a fine week and God Bless and Peace.      Thomas.
