18K Yellow Gold Solder Compatibility: 18K to 10K Gold

Question
Hi again,
It is okay to use easy 18k y gold solder on 10k y gold?
Thx

Answer
Laura, yes, you can use 18k solder on 10k gold.  The melting temperature is not so much of a problem here since lots of 10k melts higher in temp than 14k.  Some does not. With 18k EASY all should be fine.  You might check out the solders you have and see if you can find the melting and flowing temperatures.

The problem you might have is in color match.  Odds are the 18k is a richer yellow than the 10k.  Depending on the actual color of the solders and the gold item, the match may be good or not so good.  Compare the lightly buffed surfaces of the solder and 10k gold.

Some gold color differences are subtle but expect some slight differences from brand of jewelry to brand of jewelry. The same is true of solders, with variances from one solder maker to another. Generally, when using for instance 10k solder on 10k gold or 18k solder on 18k gold, you don't have to be very concerned with a color mismatch, even if the color might be slightly different.  What you do not want is an obvious line of color which will stand out to the eye.  I have used higher karat solders when in a pinch to get a job done and generally have little or no problem with color, just so I know what I am starting with by making a quick side by side comparison of the gold with the solder.  A sanded surface will show color better but if the item is to be buffed to a shine, compare the solder and gold either way.

Wishing you the best. God Bless and Peace.     Thomas.
