Identifying a Vintage Filigree Bracelet: China Mark & History
QuestionHi. I recently bought a great filigree bracelet made in China. It has 4 panels on hinges and each panel has a very nice red stone in it. The seller thought it was from around 1940. It is marked "CHINA", but the "N" in China is reversed, so if I hold it to a mirror, I read the "N" correctly in the mirror. I thought that was interesting. Can you help me identify when the bracelet was made, I can't find any information online. Thanks.
AnswerHello Cindy and thank you for your inquiry. Your bracelet sounds beautiful. I would agree with the seller that the bracelet is probably from the 1940's - 1950 period. Jewelry that was stamped during that time was sometimes crudely done to accomodate import and export requirements which makes some signatures different than others. I don't think it would have any other meaning, however you might find more information in a book on early filigree jewelry. There are several books on amazon.com that may give you some additional information on oriental filigree. I do know that it is still being made in some beautiful designs. Hope this helps and enjoy your bracelet !
