Authenticity & Value of Sterling Silver Card Case with "1 B" Mark

Question
Dear Bill and Sally
i was looking at an antique sterling card case. On the inside edge it have marking of "sterling" then "1 B" then "825"

As i know,825 indicate continental silver, lower than standard sterling silver 900-925 ? So why is there still sterling mark ? Is it fake ? And is there any meaning to "1 B" mark ? I can find any record of it.

It's a calling card case with engraving on both side, with rampant lion engraving on it (not the hallmark, the lion decorate around the name monogram)

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Brandon and thank you for your inquiry. You are right in that 825 indicates continental silver lower than sterling. However, is it possible that parts of the case are in sterling ? If so, that may be the reason for the double marking. It is also possible that it was re-marked at some time due to either retesting or repairing. The 1B is probably a manufacture or design mark and would be difficult to trace without a manufacturers name. Sorry I couldn't give you much more information but your case sounds lovely.
