QuestionI have a stainless steel ring that I had some engraving put on to. I wish I could see the writing more clearly. Is there a way to run graphite on it to enhance the writing?
AnswerAudrey, how well an coloring the engraved areas will work depends on the depth of the engraving. Whether a paint substance or chemical coloring is used to enhance the recesses of the engraving, shallow cuts simply will not hold color very well against daily wear. Unfortunately, most engraving of stainless steel jewelry is cut fairly shallow.
You can try a few jewelers and ask if they have any chemical ways to patina the metal and put that into the engraving. If so, the area is treated then the surface of the metal around the engraving is buffed with a flat hard buff to remove the coloration while leaving it in the recesses. With shallow engraving cuts, even very careful buffing will remove some of the color from the cuts.
You can try yourself with a paint like used for model cars and airplanes. Clean the engraved area thoroughly and put on the paint. Allow it to get tacky then with a flat stick wrapped with lint-free paper put some solvent for the paint on the paper and gently rub off the excess paint. You will likely use too much solvent to start and cut off the color in the engraving. Wipe off and start again.
Audrey, there is not much else to suggest besides a chemical coloration from a jewelers or the paint mentioned. One outside possibility is to check a gun shop and see if there are any coloring agents used for stainless steel in firearms refinishing. What will work for that stainless steel should also work for your ring.
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
