QuestionI was given a cameo pin/brooch and it has a marking etched into the back of it, it looks like a lopsided "8" with an extra loop in it...the brooch casing has marquisate in it and the woman's dress is low cut and very detailed, there is a bird on her left shoulder with it's wing spread and eating what looks like grapes, is this just a run of the mill cameo or should I have it appraised and hold on to it? Thanks Linda
AnswerHello Linda and thank you for your inquiry. You don't say if your cameo is stone, glass or shell, but if it is shell it could be the maker or designer mark. Most shell cameos were carved in Italy. Many cameos were carved in the likeness of mythological figures, gods and goddesses. There are several good books on cameos that might help you with your identification. You could try your local library or amazon.com . I have listed a site below that has quite a few cameos pictured and you might find a comparison there. Just copy and paste the below url into your browser address field and hit enter:

Depending on the age, frame and cameo type, you may want to have it appraised or you can research the market value for similar items on one of the online auctions. Ebay.com is a good place to start. Cameos are very collectible and always in fashion style, so I say wear it and enjoy !
