Silver Discolored After Cleaning with Gold & Gemstone Cleaner? Here's What To Do
QuestionHi Thomas, I was browsing the internet for help and found your answer on gold being cleaned with silver cleaner. You gave a comprehensive answer. I have the exact opposite problem. I accidentally cleaned my silver with gold and gemstone cleaner. It turned sort of purple/yellow. is there anything I can do to rectify this? One piece is as gift from a good friend, and I hate to lose it.
Thank you so much in advance.
Julie
AnswerJulie, it sounds like a light tarnish. A good chemically treated polishing cloth should take off the tarnish. One brand is "Sunshine Cloth" available from some jewelers and better craft stores. These cloths are so much easier than messy silver polish. Other brands are available. The cloths are used "as is" and nothing is added to the cloth. If that cannot be located, try rubbing with a moist paste of baking soda with your fingers. It that is going to work it will be known right away. If too heavy for the soda or the cloth, take the items to a jewelry store with a bench jeweler working in-house. I imagine the items can be quickly buffed to a shine and the tarnish removed.
One of these methods should solve the problem. Best Wishes. : )
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
