Understanding Diamond Jewelry Markings: What Do They Mean?

Question
i have a sterling silver cross pendant w/ clear gems. would there be a specific mark on the back side if the gems were diamonds or even diamond flakes? the onlY markings on the back are THAI, FAS & 925

Answer
Dear Kami,

The markings on the ring are all it legally needs: Manufacturer and metal.  I believe FAS is for the maker (possibly Italian company with jewelry being made in Thailand) while 925 is the recognized numerical mark for sterling. THAI tells me the ring was made in Thailand, a country leading many others in the export of jewelry items.

There is no requirement for a mark showing identity of the stones.  When you do see a mark in a ring with a CZ or perhaps a ct it is one of those cases where the maker wants to be sure CZ stones are not confused with diamonds and with a ct a total carat weight of gemstones(generally used with diamonds) is shown.   These marks are seen more often with rings sold at larger chain stores of less expensive jewelry and at department stores with inexpensive jewelry.

The only way to know what stones are in your ring is to have someone take a look who has enough knowledge to tell you.

However, if the stones are visible from the back and have gold or silver backs, the stones are mirror back rhinestones.  Also, a close look will tell you if the stones are actaully set into the metal or glued in place. Diamonds will not be glued in place.  The stones could very well be CZ's, set as stones would normally be set in jewelry.

Best wishes and enjoy the cross pendant. God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
