Identifying Antique Earrings: Origin, Age & Refinements
Question
earrings
Dear Bill and Sally,
I have bought a pair of earrings from an antique shop about 4 y.ago. Unfortunately, I didn't asked what are they....
They appear to be made from some kind of nonpresious metal, as condition of it is really bad.... but I am not sure.... I want to reframe them into a gold because i really like a sight of them. Do you have any idea what year they could have been made originally? what origin? and If I am not destroying some historical or valuable piece of jewelery? the middle part is hard to say, looks like engraved ivory/ plastic/ wood/thin bone? They are also screw on and metal is waved around and at the back. I have tried to picture them as well as possible....
Would appreciate your opinion. thanks.
AnswerHello Helena and thank you for your inquiry. It is difficult to say, but your earrings appear to be an etching/picture on either ivory or bone. The frame may be 800 silver. Possibly oriental ?
Have you checked for any hallmarks or other markings on either the back or the closure ? That would help date them. I can't really say without actually seeing them whether they could be successfully reframed, but you might want to take them to a jeweler to have it done. You'd have to take into consideration what you paid for them as to whether you want to try and do it yourself or have it professionally done. They look very pretty. Hope this helps and good luck !
Sally
