Understanding a Rose Gold Bangle with a '15' Stamp - Is It Hallmarked?

Question
hi.
i have recently inherited a bangle in a rose gold colour, which has no hall marks but does have a 15 stamp like a hallmark on the inside.can you tell me what this is if possible.
thanks.

Answer
Steve, if the 15 is all you have, I fear this means nothing to me and likely has nothing to do with the quality of the metal.

Without adequate hallmarks, you must assume the piece is either "extremely old" if of manufacture in the UK and that is too old to be realistic for such a bracelet.  Otherwise, the bangle came from  outside the UK and was simply brought in, not imported for sale.  The other and most likely possibility is the item is not precious metal and would not bear a hallmark for metal quality.

I would suggest you look for any forms of tarnish of a greenish sort which will indicate a base metal. You may also take the bangle to a reputable jeweler and ask if the metal can be tested or possibly identified as "not precious".  I say "not precious" because it is often easier to determine what an item is NOT than to establish accurately what it is.

For your information, here is a page to the assay office in Birmingham with hallmarks explained as used in the UK.  Best wishes in finding out just what the bangle truly is. I hope it is precious metal but if not do enjoy it in some way. : )

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
