Evaluating Opal Value: A Buyer's Guide to Quality and Crazing

Question

Opel and Sapphire 1
Hi, I have recently bought a couple of Opals for a total of $260, I am curious if I have a deal here or not as I have read something about crazing - where the Opal is like a marble effect, these ones shimmer with a blue light when they hit the light.  I have bought them for my wife to get made into a ring and a pendant - so huge profit isnt the reason for buying them, I bought them because they looked nice - just want to make sure I have a good deal ?  You will also notice the blue Sapphires, would I be better trading the Opels off against these ?

Answer
Hi Paul,

Opals are a very beautiful and delicate gemstone. They are mostly made of water and silica so they are not the type of gem that should be worn everyday on your hand in a ring. The crazing happens when opal dries out. They will also loose their colors if they become dried out. The easiest way to remedy this is to keep the opals hydrated. When not wearing them keep them in a dark moist small zip lock bag. Not under water but not a dry airconditioned safe or in direct sunlight. with proper care they will last for many lifetimes. Sapphires on the other hand are one of the most durable gems known. Only diamond is harder and they don't require any special care. A deal is what you make of it. The opals may not be the toughest on the block but there are few gems that are as beautiful. The sapphires as well as beautiful will take the punishment of daily use. Why not keep both and have a good start on a wonderful collection of gems for your wife. Good Luck
