QuestionI have recently purchased a 1.5ct diamond and I am hoping to set it solitary on an 18k yellow gold 2mm band in size 4. What is the best crown for this ring? Is there anything else I should know before approaching the jeweler?
AnswerLeah, for a stone that size on a 2mm band and a size 4, I suggest a heavy 6 prong crown. This would be placed into the band as in the ring at this link. Get a white gold or platinum crown.
The color is not as important as the strength and durability over time. Most yellow gold rings with solitaire stones have white crowns.

This is part of the Stuller Findings website. This company supplies jewelers around the country and beyond. Most jewelers will have a catalog of the Stuller offerings. The mountings are of a fine quality. I am not trying to sell you on this company and their products but opening a door to a variety of designs for solitaire rings. Stuller also sells the heads or crowns for the jeweler to install on the band. The strongest for a 2mm band is for the crown to be brazed between two ends of the band, where the band in cut and made to fit the sides of the crown and all then brazed. If you do not have a particular band you want to use, look over the variety offered. The crowns shown with many rings may be changed to another style.
I recommend 6 prongs because when wear over years or a sudden hard knock might happen affects the security of the stone, you need for 2 prongs to be dislodged rather than only one to bring the stone into danger of loss. The 6 prongs are more secure overall. This is also a very attractive setting for a larger diamond such as a 1.5 carat. The band styles vary considerably. I suggest against too many side stones which tend to weaken the shank in some cases.
Stuller does not sell to individuals and is a vendor only to business. However, you can see some styles even if not prices. This company is readily available to jewelers most everywhere and many have the catalogs within reach.
Leah, if you have any reaction to white gold as do some ladies, consider the X1 white gold by Stuller or the Precise White gold by another vendor named Cobb. These gold alloys do not promote or aggravate skin reactions. Otherwise, if sensitivity is a problem, go with platinum
for the crown
Best wishes with the ring. Take your time and find what you really like!
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
