Navigating Financial Discussions After Engagement: A Fair Approach

Question
Hello,
I got engaged two months ago and while talking to my fiance,we came over a money issue.I am at school studying accounting and my fiance works at Mercedes Benz and makes about 67,000.Anyways...he thinks that after we get married,we should keep separate checking accounts, which is OK with me.But he also wants to divide all of our bills in half, even though I will be making only 30,000.I don't think that's fair, because I will have to cook, take care of kids and clean and nobody is going to pay me.Do you think this is normal?
Thank you for your time
Betty

Answer
Bet,

The his money, her money, scenario never really works out simply because it is unfair. My advice is to have one account and each partner takes expenses for the week, based on bills and operating expenses. I usually have a $100 a week and my wife has $60. Usually I take her out to eat with my cut once a week, so really it works out even. Having separate accounts leads to separatism which is directly opposite of what marriage is supposed to be all about.
