Life Sentence & Anxiety: Understanding Your Options and Support

Question
Hi Rita,
I should start by stating I suffer from mild Anxiety (Mostly Social Anxiety --- I function quite normal @ my job & everyday life). I have been recommended for numerous job promotions but because of my Anxiety, I refuse on the basis that I think I would be unable to perform to the best of my ability. I structure my life to avoid Anxiety causing scenerios). I have tried Ativan(Lorazepam), & other mind
altering drugs but I don't like the side affects)& since my life is reasonably fullfilling I refuse to be drugged.(I go to movies, concerts, socialize Etc).
One day we were going out somewhere & I felt somewhat anxious & I told my hubby. He first stated I having a panic attack -- I was not --- I have done extensive research on the topic & A panic attack I WAS NOT having. I had asked him on a prior occasion to never critize my anxiety again. On this occasion I asked him again not to critize my anxiety. His reply was "This is a free country & I can say what I want to". This reply caused me to become extremely distraught , I broke down & cried & I spoke threatening words. It appears these words were spoken without me consciously been aware of what I was saying. As soon as I had spoken the words , I guess I came to my senses & I said to my self. Good God, why did I speak such words. These are the only out of character words spoken approx 9 years ago that I have spoken in over 25 years of marriage & I have always regretted speaking such words. I have two questions:
#1.  Was my hubby Abusing me if it cause such distraught ??
#2.  Should I be give a life-long sentence for speaking threatening words considering the environment in which such words were spoken ??? In spite of the circumstances, He reported such to Police. No charges were laid against me.
If Anyone else cares to comment on this -- Please do so.
Thankyou,
Shelly

Answer
Hello Shelly,

If this happened 9 years ago,is he constantly reminding you of it?   We all say things at one time or another that upsets others. Most people don't report it to the police though.I don't see any abuse from him.The words you spoke must have been threatening bodily harm to him.If the two of you are having problems because of this, please talk to a counselor or minister.Nine years is a long time to carry this around.
