Understanding Level 2 Ultrasounds & Fetal Heart Evaluation
Questionage 33 3 children my child is due june 7, 2004
I recently had an ultrasound on jan 11 and was told that i would have to come back for a level 2 ultrasound because they could not get a complete visual on the heart which could be just from the light or the muscle surrounding the heart is this true and what else could be the reason for the level 2 ultra sound my afp test came back fine and the first ultrasound indicated no signs of down syndrome what is the long term prognosis of ecogenic foci
AnswerVery often, it is difficult to visualize the four chambers of the heart or the outflow tract of the baby's heart at 19 weeks gestation. Therefore, to insure a complete study, the sonographers usually ask for the patient to return for a level II scan, which is merely a more detailed study and which will confirm that all is well. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. They really just couldn't see everything so early in the pregnancy due to the position of the baby. Please do not worry.
