Miscarriage Symptoms & Options: What to Expect After a No Heartbeat Diagnosis

Question
I am 36yrs old I have 2 children. The date of my late menstrual period was around 5-9-05.

I went in for a u/s on 7-20-05 and was told the baby had no heart beat, and I also did not see a heart beat. And that the baby stop growing at 8wks and I should be 11wks.

I talk to doctor next day she told me I had two choice's I could wait and see if I miscarrage or have a d&c.  I asked her what was best and she said I should wait a week to see to my body will m/c on its own then if not come to hospital on the 29th to have a d&c.  I asked her if there was any why the u/s was inc. and she said no that the lady that did the u/s has done them for yr's and that she also look at pic's.

I have had no signs of m/c no bleeding or cramping.  My breast are still sore but not as sore as they was.  And I am starting to have white discharge with no smell.

Is there any way they could be wrong. I don't want to question my doc. or the lady that did the u/s.  But I dont want to have a d&c without knowing for sure that my baby is dead.

Answer
If there was no fetal heartbeat on sonogram, you have, what is called, a "missed abortion". The baby stopped growing at 8 weeks gestation. Often, the body will expell the products of conception on its own. However, when the body does not cause you to miscarry, it is healthier and safer to have a D&C to evacuate the products of conception. Usually, the sonogram is very accurate.
