Abnormal Cervix During Pregnancy: Understanding Risks & Options
QuestionTHIS IS MY PROBLEM: I WENT TO A ROUTINE CHECK UP I HAD SEEN 4 OTHER DR.'S SINCE I WAS 18. DURING MY CHECKUP WITH MY NEW DR. SHE TOLD ME THAT I HAVE A ABNORMAL CERVIX. IT IS LOCATED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT OF MY STOMACH. SHE DID NOT SAY MUCH ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF COURSE I DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO ASK. OTHER PEOPLE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO SAID THAT THIS COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH ME GETTING PREGNANT AND THE ACTUAL BIRTH. I AM REALLY CONCERNED BECAUSE I AM GETTING MARRIED IN SEPTEMBER AND MY SOON TO BE HUSBAND AND I WANT TO HAVE KIDS RIGHT AWAY. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW ON THIS ISSUE. MAYBE IT CAN EASE SOME OF MY CONCERNS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

AnswerNo matter where your cervix is located, you should not have difficulty getting pregnant. The sperm can swim into the cervix and will find it wherever it may be. The difficulty may arise in the type of delivery you may have. Usually, during pregnancy the cervix and the uterus straighten out and there is no problem. However, if there is a problem anatomically, you may have to consider delivery by cesarean section. There is no way to know this prior to becoming pregnant. If your cervix is severely retroverted, you may have difficulty conceiving. HOwever, this is extremely rare. I would speak to your doctor and ask, specifically, what exactly is the position of your cervix and what are any problems you may face. I doubt that there are any problems. Don't worry. It is probably a normal variant and was merely difficut in obtaining a PAP smear.
