QuestionI'm 18 weeks pregnant. At 7 weeks, I had an abnormal PAP -high grade precancerous cells. My doc followed-up with a colposcopy which showed a lesion. She said that we should do another colposcopy at 28 weeks, maybe take the baby early, and then do a biopsy.
Yesterday I had a routine check-up with her, more senior, collegue. He recommended doing a biopsy at yesterday's appt. He said that it wouldn't harm the pregnancy which is contrary to my original doctor's advice. He really scared me!
Are there new advances/studies that would lead my younger doctor to choose waiting approach versus her more senior collegue?
AnswerIf you had a high grade squamous epithelial lesion (HSIL) on the PAP, you should have a colposcopic examination. If there is a lesion seen, a biopsy can be taken. If no lesion is seen, the biopsy can be delayed until after the baby is born. A biopsy will not harm the pregnancy and should not have any effect on the fetus. However, both plans are perfectly acceptable, since the HSIL is a slow growing lesion and can be further evaluated after the baby is born. Good luck with the pregnancy.
