TTC for 20+ Months: Cycle Length, Spotting & Concerns

Question
My husband and I have been TTC since July 2003.  My average cycle is 33 days, the longest being 36 days.  My last cycle ran from January 3rd to February 9th. (38 days).  So, we were disappointed when I got my period on Feb. 9th.  Since I was late we thought I was pregnant.  My period started on Feb 9th. and ended on February 16th.  And, for some reason I started spotting dark brown blood on Feb. 23rd, and still today, Feb. 24th.  I have taken pregnancy tests just to make sure, but they are negative.  Could I still be pregnant? Implantation bleeding this early? Or other reasons? Any insight would help.

Answer
If your last period started on February 9, the bleeding that you started to see on February 23 was, most probably, ovulation bleeding ("mittelshmerz") which is often seen at the time of ovulation. I doubt that you could have become pregnant so soon after your period. Implantation bleeding is very light and is seen 8 days after ovulation. Of course, if you do not get your period by March 7, wait another seven days and take a pregnancy test. Good luck.
