Late Period & Pregnancy Concerns: What To Do?

Question
Hi Dr. Rappaport I'm 19 no kids yet. The last time I saw my period was during the week of february. I don't know the exact date but I know definitely that it was the first week of february. Anyway, I'm late, then again, the females in my family have a history of irregularity. This is my second pregnancy scare and I'm not liking it. So here I am, 50-semi days late, confused. I took a pregancy test yesterday 3/28 and it's negative. I've had pms symptoms for about a week now: cramps, lower back pain, headaches. But I have yet to see my period. Can you help me understand what the HELL is going with me? Thank You! Hope to hear from you soon!

Answer
It would help to know the first day of your last period. If your last period started on February 1, you were due for your next period on February 28 and now you are only 29 days late for your period. A cycle is considered normal if it is 21-35 days from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period. By now, a pregnancy test would be accurate. If it is negative, you can call your gynecologist and have the doctor induce your period for you with Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days, and you should get your period within 10 days. You probably merely have some hormonal imbalance. Don't worry. It is common to have "anovulatory" cycles prior to the age of 21.
