Measles & Rubella Vaccination During Pregnancy: Risks & Concerns

Question
I am 31 yrs. old, Jan. 31, 2004 was the first day of my last period. Confirmed pregnancy test. I had a second Measles shot for nursing school on Feb. 6th. I believe I conceived on Feb. 14th. I saw my PCP and have an appoint. scheduled with my OB-gyn. I want to know what the risk is of complications due to this exposure to the vaccination. My PCP thinks that it is low because it was my second exposure but I am very worried about deformities and such. Will they be able to test for anything? Thank you.

Answer
If you had your last period on January 31 and took the Measles shot on February 6, you were not pregnant at the time of the innoculation and it will, most likely, not affect you in any way, especially since it was your second exposure. When we give the measles shot after pregnancy, we caution patients not to get pregnant again for, at least, 2 months, but, in reality, there has not been any positive evidence of a problem if they do become pregnant earlier that we advised. I doubt that you have anything to worry about. Certainly, you should take a Rubella titer with your normal blood work when you see your doctor.
