Antibiotics and Pregnancy: Safe Treatment for Dental Abscesses

Question
I have recently been diagnosed with an abcess in my mouth due to a tooth that needs to be extracted and replaced with a dental implant. The oral surgeon will not do that until after the birth in 4-6 weeks.  The dentist does not want to give me an antibiotic even though that is common practice for someone with an abcess because of being pregnant.  He referred me to my obgyn, who said the dentist needs to decide whether or not to prescribe an antibiotic and/or which one.  Now, I am in the middle and on no antibiotic to treat this infection.  I am worried that this infection can become systemic and travel to one of my organs if not treated,   which could be deadly if not treated promptly.  Should I insist on  being on an antibiotic, and is there any harm for being on one for this length of time (until c-section on or around April 8-22? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Shelley,

There are several commonly used antibiotics that should not be taken during late pregnancy, but most are not a problem. Your Ob can tell you which ones to avoid and that should leave a large number that would be OK. I see no reason you cannot be treated.
