Understanding Late Pregnancy: Dilation, Ripening, and Twin Delivery

Question
I am expecting twins the first part of October.  Went to the Dr today and he checked me and told me that I am dialated to a 2 and also made a comment that I am 'ripe'.  Can you explain to me what he meant by that?  My breasts have already started lactating too.  Is this normal.  I know that most twins come early and am expecting that to happen anytime now.  Just not sure what to expect now that it is getting so close to time.  Could you just give me a little more insight into what I may start experiencing, etc...
Thanks,
Brittney

Answer
Hi Brittney,

Congratulations on making it this far in your pregnancy.  When your doctor says your cervix is "ripe", he means it has softenend and thinned out...two things needed for your cervix to dilate and labor to truly begin.  So, it won't be long for you.  It sounds like you are on your way to having your babies within the next couple of weeks.  Watch for contractions or tightening that happens on regular intervals.  If you have more than 6 contractions in an hour for 2 hours, go to the hospital and get checked out.  Also, watch for any leakage of fluid, decreased fetal movement, or bleeding.  Those are all reasons to head to the hospital for evaluation.  Good luck!
