Sleeping Pills and Labor: Safety Concerns & Information

Question
When I was pregnant with my first child, I went to the hospital
during the middle of the night with labor pains.  The nurse sent
me home, gave me a sleeping pill and told me to get a good night
sleep and that I would be dialated by morning.  She was right but I
have always wondered how safe taking that pill was.  I want to be
fully informed before I give birth again in early June.

Answer
I do not know what the "sleeping pill" was that the nurse gave you. Sometimes, however, if you are in prodromal labor, relaxation and sleep can allow the cervix to ripen and dilate. Certain sedatives are not used during pregnancy, but some can allow you to rest and allow the body to continue its labors.
