C-Section Risk During Subsequent Pregnancies: Factors & Considerations

Question
HI WHEN I HAD MY FRIST CHILD I HAD TO HAVE A EMERGENCY C-SECTION DUE TO A FIT WHILST IN LABOUR I SUFFER WITH EPILISY,MY QUESTION IS WHEN I HAVE ANOTHER CHILD WILL I HAVE A C-SECTION BIRTH AGAIN?

Answer
Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear that you had to have surgery to have your child, however, I hope both you and the baby are now fine.

Whether or not you need to have another c-section depends upon a lot of factors.

First of all, you would need to find a healthcare provider and a hospital that would allow you to have a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section).  Unfortunately, this has been less and less available, although there are hospitals out there that will at least let you try.

It would also depend upon how your first surgery was done and how it was repaired.  There are generally two different kinds of c-sections, one in which the incision goes up your belly and one in which it is a small incision along your pubic line.  Generally, the pubic line cuts leave less scaring and heal better.  If you had this kind of a incision, your chances will be improved in finding a doctor who will let you try a vaginal birth.

Unfortunately, even though the risks of VBAC are very, very small (less than 1% have uterine rupture, which is the big scare), because of the risk of litigation, many insurance companies no longer allow them.

Best wishes and I hope all goes well with you!
