Understanding HPV and Colposcopy Results: What to Expect
QuestionI had mildly abnormal test results from my yearly pap so i had a colposcopy. My dr. told me it was probably HPV, so i freaked out about this. The vinegar solution gave him a slight reaction but he said if he doesn't call me about the results, to not worry. I never got a call back and was just scheduled for another pap in 5 months. Because of the slight reaction to the vinegar solution, is this definately HPV? That was crazy news to me when i've been with 3 people total!
AnswerWhen we send a PAP smear out, they give us results of the PAP (normal, Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, low grade lesion, high grade lesion, CIS, cancer) as well as HPV hybrid capture (a DNA test that tells us the specific strains of HPV isolated). It is not just based on a viegar solution. YOur doctor should definitively know if you have HPV or not. IF you do not have certain strains of HPV, you need not worry. IF you have specific suspicious strains of HPV, a colposcopy is done and tissue samples are sent to pathology. If there is no problem, you only have to have a PAP smear done every 6 months until you get back to a normal PAP. If your PAP is normal, you can return to yearly PAPs. If your doctor did not call you, don't worry.
