First OB Appointment: Ultrasound & Pregnancy Dating - What to Expect

Question
This is my second child, 4th pregnancy.  I had two miscarriages before having my son.  One was very early and the other was  a missed miscarriage at 11 weeks.  I then had my son with virtually no problems.  My son is now 5 months old and I only had 2 periods in between these pregnancies.

My LMP was May 5 and I WAS pretty sure I ovulated on the 21st, but now I'm not so sure.  I had my OB appointment on the 24th.  During my exam (before the ultrasound), the dr said I was supposed to be 7 weeks and 1 day pregnant.  After the exam, he said my uterus was measuring large and sent me for an ultrasound.  Once there, we discovered that the baby was only measuring 2mm and he said I was actually 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant (we did see a heartbeat though, 90 bpm).

That means I tested positive with a home pregnancy test at 2 weeks and 6 days pregnant!

I would also like to add that I had quant. hcg done on June 04 (33 units) and on June 07 (147) and June 08 (163).

When looking @ the pictures after the ultrasound, he referred to the baby as, "cystic looking area with a baby in it"...then he gestured toward two other, "cystic looking areas."

My question is, does it seem that my dates were just off?  Or is the baby not growing right?  Also, what might these other "cystic looking areas" be?  Does that mean there might be more babies? Or just cysts?

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Jenelle

Answer
Hello Jenelle. From your dates, I think the 5 week age was the accurate one. This baby is growing just fine. I understand your anxiety given your past history, BUT there is NOTHING you can do to prevent this pregnancy from failing, if that is what is going to happen. It is a little hard on your body to conceive so soon and sadly I guess this means that you are NOT breastfeeding- as you would likely not have ovulated at this time if you were nursing. I am sad for your infant. I have very little use for or faith in ultrasound and would urge you to NOT have ANY further scans unless there is a true medical emergency- like vaginal bleeding. Doctors do NOT inform you that ultrsound has not yet been found completely safe for the fetus and it is highly overused for their convenience. I would suggest that you seek out the care of a midwife- she will do a better job of guiding you to remain healthy during this pregnancy and you will have a more joyfull birth in the end. Hope that helps- Cheri. PS- would you like to share with me the reasons for no longer breastfeeding? If you were advised to stop nursing due to the second pregnancy, the advise is wrong. Anyway, get back to me if you like. When you access experts on this site, you take your chances with our beliefs. I happen to feel that every infant has a right to it's mother's breastmilk and it is not acceptable to deprive it of the most perfect food available.  You also knew from my bio, how I feel about breastfeeding. All the best- Cheri.Hello again Jenelle- thanks for the info. I wish you had posted to me during your difficult nursing experience. Though lactation consultants can sometimes be usefull, I really have not had much luck with them or other breastfeeding "experts". Have you heard about La Leche League? They really are the TRUE experts. When you have another baby, I urge you to work with La Leche League. Find your local Leader NOW and start attending their great info sessions. If you run into problems that your Leader cannot handle, LLL International has access to a large medical advisory group of doctors who are totally committed to breastfeeding and will move heaven and earth to help you. I have consulted them several times over the years and they have always come through. Please do not give up on nursing your next baby, it could be totally different this time. All the best- Cheri.
