Thermochoice Endometrial Ablation: Understanding Risks & Side Effects
QuestionI have been offered a Thermochoice Endometrial Ablation for heavy bleeding. I am not sure of this as have been told menstrual bleeding is a way of releasing toxins from the body? Also is it possible to still have hormonal side-effects eg: premenstrual like mood swings, depression etc.. On a website some people cnted they noticed these problems started after the ablation. Does the body still re-act as if it is still bleeding? Also is there a possibility of bleeding in the womb still and it not coming out due to the scar tissue from the ablation? As there was a comment of old blood being found in the Uterus a period of time after an Ablation being done. Thank you for your time and any comments would be good
AnswerIf you have fibroids of the uterus that are causing heavy bleeding with your periods, endometrial ablation is a good way to reduce the blood flow each month. It is a mechanical method of controlling the bleeding. It is not preventing your hormones from causing a period; It is merely preventing blood flow from the uterus by creating scarring of the endometrium so that it does not bleed. If you are having heavy periods due to hormonal imbalance, ablation will not help. The way to stop hormonal imbalance is to regulate your cycle or lower your blood flow by taking either birth control pills or estrogen therapy. A period is not a means to "release toxins from your body". The period is only the lining of the uterus (endometrium) shedding each month when you do not become pregnant. If you are bleeding too heavily, hormonal therapy should be tried first. Ablation should be the last resort (prior to hysterectomy) to avoid heavy bleeding due to fibroids or DUB (dysfunctional uterine bleeding). Ablation does not cause menopausal signs such as mood swinigs, depression, flushes, flashes, or night sweats.
