Question
Hello,
Hi my name is Tania and am writing to you in a desperate call for an opinion or guidance into the right direction. My husband and I have been trying to have a 2nd child after I was told twice in my life that getting pregnant would be very difficult for me due to period irregularities. My periods come & go as they please my last was in sep 04, before that June 04.
Meanwhile I had a wrist injury and was sent to get a bone scan and an x-ray & was injected with a radioactive substance, i had a pregnancy test on the day prior to going which was negative and seeming we were trying for 6 months and nothing had happenned I assumed I wasnt pregnant. However approx 5-6 days after the scan i started getting saw breasts & 8 days after the scan I had another test which was positive!
Please help, what do I do? How dangerous is this? What are the chances in abnormalities and what kind?I am so very frightened I dont know ANYTHING about this. I dont know exactly how far I am as I havent had any period since September last year, but I do know that I cant be too far in as I had a test 2 weeks ago that responded negatively. Please Help me!
Please Help!
Yours in Desperation
AnswerAn X-ray of your wrist will probably have no effect on your fetus. However, you have to find out what kind of bone scan you had and what readioactive material was injected. Most of the time, too much radiation will cause miscarriage and will not cause congenital defects in a growing embryo, but I can't tell what exposure you had by your description. You have to ask the radiologist exactly what was done and what the risk was. If you had a positive pregnancy test, a sonogram will let you know exactly how far pregnant you are. However, sonograms are not accurate until after 10 weeks getation so you will have to wait a bit for the answer to that question. A sohongram after 6 weeks will show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat (but is not accurate for dating the pregnancy).
