Question -
I'm 44, 1 live birth, 5 miscarriages due to abuse. My lesbian wife and I are trying to have a baby through the use of a good friend's sperm. Our question is we are inseminating through a syringe 2 days before ovulation, O-day and 2 days after. but the sperm gets to us from the night before or the morning of usage. it comes refrigerated, we keep it refrigerated and then take it out to room temperature in the evening after work around 8 p.m. and use it around 10 p.m. Is the sperm still alive and working or do we need to use it immediately after ejaculation?  We have been trying obviously without success and need to know if there is any other helpful suggestions besides using the syringe that would help us?  Please respond at your earliest convenience.  thank you  lisa and brandi

Sperm will remain viable for up to 24 hours after ejaculation if kept in a liquid medium at the correct temperature. The best form of artificial insemination is using "washed sperm" and introducing them directly into the uterus. Your method of merely introducing the semen via a syringe into the vagina will not work as well as the other method but should work eventually. NEVER introduce unwashed sperm directly through the cervix into the uterus. That will cause severe cramps.

Thank you for your response.  But we don't know what the correct temperature for liquid medium would be. Also do we need to elevate my legs for 15 minutes after insertion of sperm?

Answer
You do not have to refrigerate the semen speciment as long as you use it within 24 hours and it is in a liquid medium (not dried out). Make sure that you are ovulating when you insert it.  You do not have to elevate your legs at all. Once the semen is introduced into the vagina, the sperm will swim through the cervical mucus and into the uterus and will get to the tubes on their own. (The spermless semen will then flow out of your vagina). Good Luck to you.
