Hello, I am 25 yrs old, and my last period was may 25. I am in good health. I had my yearly exam including pap this year and everything is good. My question is concerning ovarian cancer. While doing a pap, do doctors check out the ovaries too? And also, I am thinking of becoming artificially inseminated and I am still a virgin. Is is possibe to undergo the procedure, get pregnant and still have a baby while you are technically still a virgin?

A PAP smear is merely a swab of the outside of the cervix. It is a teet for cervical cancer and has nothing at all to do with cancer of the ovaries. We usually do not test for ovarian cancer unless there is a sudden enlargment of one or both ovaries or if you have a sudden, large drop in weight. . If the sonogram shows suspicion, we would get a CA-125. If that is elevated, we would perform surgery to evaluate the cervix and take a frozen section bioipsy. In order to become arficially inseminated, the hymen must be open enough to allow insertion of a speculum to allow intoduction of the donor sperm.
AnswerDuring an annual exam, we do a bimanual exam in order to palpate the abdominal organs. If we find that the ovaries appear enlarged, we would send you for a sonogram. If the sonogram shows an enlarged ovary, we would send you for a blood test (CA-125). If the CA-125 was elevated, you wold have a laparoscopic examination. If you do not have any symptoms or any vague complaints, there is no reason to do anything.
