Understanding Anti-Sperm Antibodies: Causes & Infertility

Question
I've got some problems with infertility, it is about immunologic causes. Which factors can lead to occurring antibodies in sperm? I know there is something about breaking blood-testis barrier in seminiferous tubules, doctor told me, but..? What exactly it is? What is the most common etiology of breaking BTB (blood-testis barrier), and occurring of auto-antibodies in semen?

Answer
Hello Jan,

I presume you are referring to anti-sperm antibodies in you.  This is where a woman forms antibodies against her husband's sperm, which occurs from direct contact.  It is not very common but does occur.  These antibodies then attach to the sperm, destroy them and prevent them from attaching to the egg.

The treatment for this is for you to have intercourse using a condom for a 6 months period of time.  Basically, this is so that your body can get rid of the antibodies.  Then you can resume trying again.

You discussion regarding the "blood-testis barrier", is not computing with me.  I'm not sure where your doc got this explanation.

I hope this helps,
