Understanding Ultrasound Accuracy: Tracking Pregnancy Dates

Question
i cant remember when my last period was but i guessed it was roughly the middle of November, i went for a scan to see how far on i was as i was considering an abortion and the doctor said i was just gone 16 weeks, then i went for a scan 3 weeks later, for a dating scan because i decided to keep baby and they said i was 17 + 2. How can i onyl be 17 weeks 3 weeks after the docter told me i was 16 weeks? would my dating scan mean that it was 17 + 2 from conception as i dont know the date of my LMP?

Answer
Dear Julie,

Unfortunately, ultrasounds done after 12 weeks are a bit less accurate as far as dating is concerned. That's not to say that it will be completely inaccurate, but scans done early in pregnancy can be relied upon much more heavily for dating purposes.

More than likely the dates given are fairly close, but it may be somewhere between the two. The main thing to remember is that, when the time comes for delivery, you and your doctor are both aware that dates were questioned from the beginning. It will make a difference if you happen to go into premature labor.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
