Understanding Stillbirth and Blighted Ovum: A Personal Story

Question
Hello!
I am 25 years old and september of 2006 at 40 weeks I found out that our little girl had no heartbeat. The following day I was induced.  Results from the autopsy showed that she had two holes in the chambers of her heart. Our family has no history of genetic disorders.
Seven months later we concieved again.  According to my cycle I should have been 14 weeks pregnant. The u/s showed a sac with no baby.  The doctor told us it was called blighted ovum.  I was scheduled for a D AND E a week later. Our doctor told us the two pregnancies were unrelated and that we would be able to try again in two months. I would like to know if you think we should get some further testing? I don't think I could handle another loss. Do you think we should see a genetic counselor or a high-risk doctor?   thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Courtney,

As tragic as all of this is, your doctor is more than likely correct. The two incidents probably are unrelated. However, there is no harm in seeking the advice of an obstetrician that specializes in high risk pregnancies if that will ease your mind. Your comfort level and emotional well-being going into the next pregnancy will be very important. The fact that you have had two consecutive pregnancy losses should qualify you for a visit, or at least a consultation, if that is the route you would like to go.

I hope that helps and answers your question. I wish you well.
