Alcohol & Hair Dye During Pregnancy: What's Safe?
QuestionI am 29 and about to start trying. I have heard that you should not drink at all, but now I am hearing a glass of wine a couple of days a week is good for the baby. I enjoy drinking wine but am not willing to hurt my baby to do so. What is correct? Also, I highlight my hair and have heard you can not do that either? I want to do everthing to ensure a healthy baby. Thank you for your time.
AnswerThe recommendation is to refrain from ALL alcoholic beverages for the entire pregnancy. No exceptions. No drinking at all. We used to allow one glass of wine or a cocktail per week around ten years ago, but it has been found that ANY amount of alcohol can lead to the "fetal alcohol syndrome" which is devastating to the baby. There are absolutely no reports that wine is in any way good for the baby. You can, though, highlight your hair, but sometimies the dye does not take well due to the changes in the protein of the hair during pregnancy and the color can be off (green rather than blonde). However, it is not unsafe during pregnancy.
