Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy: What's Safe?

Question
Friend's doc tells her it is okay to have occasional glass of red wine. She is only 5 mos pregnant. Last trimester she says it's okay more often. This freaks me out. What do you say about this?  How can I get through to her because her "expert" doc says it's okay.

Answer
Years ago, we used to allow an occasional drink of wine with dinner during pregnancy. However, in recent yars, it has becme evident that we do not know how much alcohol is "safe" during pregnancy. For this reason, we advise that absolutely no alcohol is safe for use during pregnancy. It does not matter if it is in the first, second, or third trimester of pregnancy. Binge drinking may cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but no alcohol is allowed during pregnacy.
