Understanding a Level 2 Ultrasound & Potential Risks in Pregnancy

Question
My daugter is 26, and 6 months pregnant.  They did a level 2 ultra sound because they said the baby had a left ventricle which was on the high end of normal.  It's a boy.  They are now telling her it could be downs syndrome or some other problem with fluid on the brain or it could be normal, no problem.  We are so worried and nothing more is scheduled for a month.  Does this sound right?  Is there some other tests or something or than an amnio to tell us if everything is okay?  This is my daughters first baby and my first grandson, we can hardly stand this wait.

Answer
Amniocentesis is the only test that can definitely diagnose chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome. However, the problem with the ventricles of the heart, is only a "soft" sign of Down's syndrome (as is "nuchal transluscency"). I would repeat the sonogram to assess the cardiac outflow tracts as well as any echogenic focus in the heart, but I do not put too much stock in this finding. Don't worry since there is nothing you can do after 24 weeks gestation. Good luck.
