Early Pregnancy Concerns: No Uterine Mass & HCG Levels

Question
Hi. I am 37 and found out on nov. 29 that im pregnant. my last period was oct. 21.  last week, i had some light pink spotting on the paper when i went to the bathroom.  dr did a transvaginal ultrasound and didn't find anything in my uterus.  checked hcg levels..mon. they were 3420 and by wed. they were only 3560.  went on fri. to a specialist, he did the same thing and couldn't find anything at all in my uterus, but its still growing.  my hcg was 5470. he suggested a d & c and if nothing shows up after that to do a laproscopy immediately following.  he checked the tubes during the u.s and said everything looks normal.  what could be happening? im so confused and scared, i just dont know if i should go ahead and do it or wait and see what happens.

Answer
Dear Jenni,

The real danger here is the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening. You've said that they checked the tubes and they looked clear, but they also see nothing in your uterus. The problem is that, either way, it does not sound like this is leading to a normal, healthy pregnancy. That is more than likely why the doctors have suggested the D & C and laparoscopy at this point. They just do not want to risk your health.

I understand that this is a very difficult decision and I encourage you to discuss your hesitation further with your doctor, but I really feel they would not be recommending this course unless they were concerned for your well-being. I encourage you not to put off the conversation and decision too long. And please accept my expression of well wishes. I'll have a good thought for you.
