HELLP Syndrome & Second Pregnancy: Risks, Monitoring, and Expert Guidance

Question
I am just recently trying to get pregnant (and with what I feel to be implantation bleeding..hope I am) However I am scared to death. I had HELLP Syndrome with my son who was delivered by emergency c-section at 26 weeks (HELLP Syndrome hit at 25 weeks). The OBGYN I was going to assured me that I should be okay to continue with a second pregnancy and that I would be monitored closely. Since then the drs I liked have moved from that practice leaving the ones I am not comfortable with. I was hoping to switch to a different one if a second pregnancy occurred. What I am wondering is what is the likelihood of HELLP returning and should I see a perinatologist for the 2nd pregnancy? Also would I be put on bed rest or any other modification. I am asking because my son is special needs and would have to be taken 45 minutes one way to therapy twice a week.

Answer
Brandy,
These are great questions to ask when you are interviewing your next doctor. Yes, that's right, you should interview a few different practices. Make sure that you and all of the docs in the group are on the same page. This way you can find the right doctor for you.
I don't think you would need to go on bedrest this time around, unless you start having blood pressure issues again. (I am assuming that you were preeclamptic before you went in to HELLP.)
I don't know the exact numbers in my head, but you are at a slight risk for developing these problems again. It is not that high of chance though. Your doctors will monitor you closely. Yes, they should send you to a perinatologist given your history. If not for anything else, at least for a level two ultrasound. I would imagine that they would want to see you more though.Good luck!
