Coumadin & Menstruation: What You Need to Know

Dear Dr. Rappaport,

I am 44, have 2 children and my last menstrual period started 12/2/04.

There is a possibility that I may go on Coumadin.  What are the ramifications of this drug when menstruating?

Coumadin is a blood thinner (similar to Heparin). It can cause heavier bleeding or irregular bleeding at various times of the month. YOu should make sure that you check your coagulation profiles often to ensure that you do not have too much Coumadin in your system.
