Post-Pap Smear Bleeding: Causes, Concerns & What to Expect
QuestionI'm 26 years old, no children or pregnancies and I've been on the Pill for about 3 years. I've always had regular periods and normal Pap results, but for my last exam they could not get enough cervical cells. I had to see an OBGYN and he had to dialate my cervix to get the cells. It was very painful, but the results came back normal. He told me I would be spotting and this lasted about 4 weeks. Then, I had my regular period on 10/25. After that cycle, the spotting went away. I had sex sometime around 11/02 and then I started bleeding again right away. I saw my PCP on 11/29 and she gave me a pregnancy test, which was negative. She mentioned that the Pap may have disrupted things and she put me on a stronger Pill. I started the new brand on 12/05 and the bleeding still has not stopped (although this week would be my normal period cycle, with the reminder pills). Have you heard of anything like this? My doctor told me not to worry, but this just seems so out of the ordinary. I appreciate any info you may have, thanks!
AnswerIt is more likely that the bleeding you are having is due to the pill and not due to the PAP. If you continue to bleed, your doctor should give your Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should stop bleeding within 10 more days. Then you should start a stronger pill for awhile. Discuss it with your gynecologist, not your PCP.
