Early Pregnancy Concerns: Low HCG & History of Miscarriage
QuestionMy lmp was Dec 21 and I have two children. In the past year I've had 3 miscarriages. The last one was in October and was ended with a d&c. They tested the fetus and found chromosome 15 was defective. My periods are regular but tend to be short - no longer than 27 days. On Jan 1 I had spotting and thought I was getting my period again (that has happened in the past). The spotting lasted less than a day which made me wonder. My sister in law had those ultrasensitive pregnancy tests, so I used one of those and it came back positive. I went to my doctor yesterday and had blood drawn. They called today to say my hcg level was 1560 - high for this point. They didn't even think I'd be pregnant due to my lmp date. They are retesting me tomorrow, but freaked me out by stating it may be a molar pregnancy.
I know I'm hyper sensitive due to my past miscarriages, and now I have myself really worried. A friend mentioned it could be multiples, which do run in my family, but my head is spinning. Any thoughts from your end?
Thank you so much.
Colleen
AnswerIt is hard to believe that you had a positive pregnancy test and had a normal period that started on December 21. Perhaps that period was a bit lighter than normal and was really not your period, since it takes at least 10-14 days for any pregnancy test to show a positive result. That means that you had to conceive at least 10 days prior to January 1, which would have been prior to December 23 and, therefore, you could not had a period only three days prior to that. If the next blood test has doubled, you are definitely pregnant and a sonogram will give you the exact day of conception. A sonogram will also be able to diagnose whether there is any evidence of a molar pregnancy.
