Understanding High HCG and Yolk Sac at 5.6 Weeks Gestation
QuestionHi Sara,
I had a ultrasound done yesterday 11/8/10 and the impression stated "single gestational sac and single yolk sac. No embryonic pole." It also said a small subchorionic hemorrhage. I also had my beta HCG done and it was 26652. What does all this mean? This is my first pregnancy and I am concerned. I've read info that goes from normal to possible molar pregnancy. Your help is greatly appreciated.
AnswerHi Tracy,
I am so sorry for the delay in response. At 5.6 weeks, it is normal to not see a fetal pole, and it seems that your HCG level is not too low, which is good news. The small subchorionic bleed can also be a typical and normal finding, because that it where the baby has implanted into the wall of your uterus. I am assuming you will be followed up in 5 - 7 days. By then, a transvaginal ultrasound should show the fetal pole. I know it's hard to wait and not be concerned, but at less than 6 weeks these are still findings of a normally progressing pregnancy on ultrasound.
Take care,
Sara
