Planning a Second Pregnancy at 32: Fertility & Timing

Question
I am 32 years old.  My husband and I have one son(now 14 years old)  We are wanting to try and get pregnant again.  Our son will graduate in four years and we feel we are too young to have an empty house.  And we want more children.  We have waited so long, because we were so young when he was born.  We wanted to enjoy him and become financially stable.

I have a regular cycle of 28 days(give or take a day here and there)  And I usually ovulate around the 12th to 14th day.  I do have hypothyroidism.  I am on meds for that.  My last period started on the 22nd of Jan.

I quess I am wondering if there would be any problems getting pregnant or during pregnancy with my age and the fact that I have waited so long inbetween pregnancies?

Thank you and I look forward to your answer.

Sincerely,
Rita

Answer
As long as you are having regular cycles and get your period every month, you should have no difficult in conceiving nor in carrying a pregnancy to term. You are not considered "old" in any sense. However, after the age of 30, there is an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities that can occur, so, when you do, indeed, conceive, you should be tested for chromosomal abnormalities (either with nuchal fold transluscency testing by sonogram in early pregnancy, or by amniocentesis (if you are over 35 years of age at the time of delivery). Otherwise, there is no problem at all.
