AnswerYou can have an amniocentesis performed at 18 weeks gestation where a karyotype is done and you will, then, know if there is XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes. Otherwise, a sonogram can tell (after 20 weeks) if a penis or scrotum is identified. However, sometimes, even if it is male, they cannot identify the penis or scrotum so cannot tell you definitely whether it is a boy or girl.
