Answer
There is no foolproof way to guarantee a boy or a girl, outside of using in vitro fertilization and then gender-selecting which embryos you put back, which is an ethically shaky practice many fertility clinics will not engage in.  However, there is a little you can do at home to improve your odds.

First, remember that gender is determined by the father's sperm.  All women have XX chromosomes, and all men are XY.  So all women's eggs are X, but half the men's sperm are X and half are Y.  X (girl) sperm swim slower, but live longer, while Y (boy) sperm swim fast and die fast.  This means that if you have sex 3-4 days prior to ovulation, and then abstain, you will have better odds of having a girl, while if you only have sex the day of ovulation and the day after, you have better odds of having a boy.

Now you have to figure out when you ovulate.  To do this, you need to chart your basal body temperature.  Get a thermometer marked in tenths (or preferably hundredths) of a degree; digital thermometers work great.  Take your temperature every day before you get out of bed (don't even get up to turn off the alarm clock!).  This is your basal body temperature, and it should remain fairly consistent over time.  It will rise by up to a degree within 24 hours of ovulation, and it will rise again within 24 hours of implantation if you become pregnant.  Charting your BBT over several months will give you a good feeling for your body's natural cycles and allow you to predict when you will next ovulate.

Good luck!
