First Pregnancy: When Does Cervical Dilation Typically Begin?

Question
I am 40 wks and 2 days pregnant with my first child, and I keep reading that you are supposed to start dilating a week or 2 before you go into labor in first pregnancies.  On my last dr appt (friday) she checked my cervix and said ti was still closed but had shortened a bit.  My question is why haven't I started dilating yet?  I'm 2 days overdue and still not feeling any major signs of labor starting anytime soon, is this normal for a first pregnancy?

Answer
This could be normal, it could be a sign that you won't dilate (doubt that)
I know it is hard to wait, but you will simply have to.  Your due date may be off, that happens sometimes as well.
Rest assured no one has been pregnant forever even if it feels like it.
Good luck, rest up!  The rest of your life is going to be much different and alot more droggy!
