Delayed Period After Birth Control Discontinuation: What to Expect?
Questionhi,
I was recently told by a neurologist that i have migraines and that my birthcontrol could be making them worse. He recommended that i stop taking them. I stopped taking them the Sunday i would have been taking the white pills for my period. its almost been three weeks since then and i still have not started. I thought i was pregnant at first because I'm noticing many of the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, that wasn't the case when i took both a blood and urine pregnancy test. so now i guess my question is.. When you stop taking birthcontrol does it take a little while for my body to get used to being off of it before i start my period again or should it come normally every month? I for some reason still think i might be pregnant. I'm still experiencing some of the symptoms, but also don't think the tests would have lied..
AnswerUsually when you stop taking the pill, you get a period, and then the following period tends to come late by a week or more. Since you didn't get a period after stopping, and developed pregnancy symptoms, I would suspect pregnancy, but I would believe the tests. Sometimes women on the pill don't get a period at the end of the month. Usually that's no cause for concern, as long as pregnancy is ruled out. It does take a little while now for your body to get back to normal cycles. Probably you'll get a period within about 6 weeks of when you stopped the pill. Best wishes.
