Delayed Period: Understanding Potential Causes & When to See a Doctor

Question
I am 23, I have 3 children, and the first day of my last period was 18th January 05. I have done 3 tests, the first was at 1 week late, the second was at three weeks late and the third was at 5 weeks late, the last test that I used was one of the sensitive ones that can be used early, all of the tests were negative but I still haven't recieved my period, I have not been to the doctors as I thought that my period may have stopped because I have put on weight and my diet has become unhealthy, but this morning after I went to the toilet I noticed a tiny line of blood on the tissue, so I wiped myself again and this time their was a thick cream coloured mucus spotted with blood, could this be a sign that I am pregnant or could it just be the return of my period?

Answer
If three pregnancy tests have shown a negagive result, you are definitely not pregnant. The spot you noticed this morning may, indeed, be the start of your period. If you have any doubts, take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours it indicates a pregnancy. If the results are less than 5 on both tests, you are not pregnant. If you are not pregnant, and have not had a period since January, you should have your period induced and start birth control pills to regulate your cycle.
